Hotels in Los Angeles: prices, timing and areas
Los Angeles is not one centre but a sprawling mosaic of districts with very different characters, so you choose a stay here for a specific plan. Beachgoers aim for Santa Monica and Venice Beach, film fans for Hollywood with the Walk of Fame, and those who want to be near the museums and offices pick Downtown. This is a car city, where distances and traffic matter and the metro covers only part of town, so many guests use a car or Uber. The climate is mild year-round, and a typical stay runs as long as five nights. This list has 2 285 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars in Downtown. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Los Angeles: the month, the day of the week and the district.
When to book a stay in Los Angeles for less
It is cheapest in November, when traffic eases and rates fall by about a sixth against the yearly average. March is the priciest, at the start of the spring season. This is more of a weekday than a weekend city, so it is usually cheapest on the weekend and most expensive on Monday, when the working week begins. Here, unlike in smaller cities, it pays to book well ahead, as the lowest rates show up about two months before arrival. In summer, the peak from May to September, it is better to book earlier still.
What a stay costs by property type
Los Angeles is an expensive market with a wide range, from a hostel bed in Hollywood to an apartment by the beach. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and simple motels, and the gap up to four and five stars in the fashionable districts is large. Apartments can cost more than a regular hotel because you rent a whole place. Below are indicative nightly rates from the summer.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed | from approx. USD 45 |
| Budget hotel or motel (1-2 stars) | from approx. USD 70 |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. USD 110 |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. USD 160 |
| Five-star hotel | from approx. USD 300 |
Indicative rates for a double room, from the summer. Out of season, especially in November, the same property is often noticeably cheaper, so check the real price for your dates in the search above.
Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
The priciest are the beach districts, Santa Monica and Venice Beach, along with Downtown with its towers, and West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The most properties are in Hollywood, with the full range of prices and close to the main sights. It is cheaper in Koreatown, central and well connected, and in the districts to the south, such as South Los Angeles and Inglewood. Given the size of the city, expect some travel whatever your base. Below are indicative nightly prices in a few areas.
| Area | Indicative price per night (from) |
| South Los Angeles and Inglewood | from approx. USD 90 |
| Hollywood | from approx. USD 120 |
| Koreatown | from approx. USD 130 |
| Downtown Los Angeles | from approx. USD 150 |
| West Hollywood and Beverly Hills | from approx. USD 170 |
| Santa Monica and Venice Beach | from approx. USD 180 |
The cheapest areas are further from the beaches and the main sights, but in a car city the travel time still matters. By the beach and in Downtown you pay the most for the location.
Which stay in Los Angeles suits whom
- First time in Los Angeles. Hollywood is the easiest base, near the Walk of Fame and the main sights, or Downtown by the museums and transit.
- By the sea. Santa Monica and Venice Beach, with the beach, the promenade and the pier. The dearest, but a classic Pacific holiday.
- For couples. West Hollywood and Beverly Hills with their restaurants and shops, or boutique hotels Downtown. In the evening most of the life is in West Hollywood.
- Cheaper and central. Koreatown, well connected by metro, with a strong food scene. Good for a longer stay without a car.
- With breakfast. Some hotels include a buffet in the rate, which helps you set off early for the studios or the ocean before the traffic builds.
- Near the airport. Hotels around LAX suit an early flight or a night on the way, with a free shuttle at many of them.
